Tauranga Crossing
Extension (Stage 3)

Overview

Two-storey base build extension to existing Tauranga Crossing shopping centre.

Tauranga Crossing is one of the Bay of Plenty’s leading retail destinations. Fosters was engaged through a competitive tender to deliver the next stage (stage 3) of the shopping centre's growth.

Anchored by Farmers, the build included six other specialty stores. Delivered in 16 months.

About the project

The project comprised three separable base-build packages: a new two-storey Farmers department store, six specialty retail tenancies, and wider centre upgrades including a new entry road and associated roading works.

The development formed an extension to the existing shopping centre, requiring careful integration of services, structure, and access within the operational retail environment.

Despite building consent delays, design development, and added scope, Fosters maintained the original start and finish dates set at tender. Programme re-sequencing and adaptive methodology enabled works to progress in unaffected areas, keeping momentum onsite.

A key client objective was early access for the Farmers fitout. Through early engagement with the Farmers delivery team, Fosters enabled fitout access six weeks ahead of programme - an achievement central to meeting the client’s final handover timeframe.

In addition to the base build, Fosters completed two specialty fitouts - Toyworld and the Farmer Autovillage showroom - along with entry upgrades and external works. The entire project was delivered on time and on budget, ready for opening day.

Client testimonial

Tauranga Crossing Development Manager, Richard Taaffe, said working with Fosters was a positive experience from start to finish.

“I’d highly recommend Fosters based on the relationships created, the communications delivered and the fact that it never felt like we were in a contractual process – they simply got on with delivering the project” he said.

“In this case, there was the added complexity of connecting the extension to the existing building. Fosters’ collaborative approach, flexibility, and ongoing communications - with both our team and existing tenants - made that process seamless. They’re clearly experienced at working in live environments.”

“This never felt like a contractual process – Fosters simply got on with delivering the project.”
