Overview
The Hilton Brown Te Rapa complex consists of a 900m² building with a 20m long indoor pool purpose-built for swimming lessons.
Being a straight tender, Fosters had no input into the design of the project but building a commercial ‘learn to swim’ pool included a complicated mechanical system and specialist pool equipment. Most important was getting the thermal envelope right.

About the project
Construction of a swimming complex has some rather specific challenges, making the sequence of tasks very important.
Managing this project through covid lockdowns, supply issues and then the additional challenge of faulty roof and wall cladding, Fosters had to pull out all the stops to ‘make it happen’.

Hilton Brown Swimming Pool at Te Rapa, a commercial ‘learn to swim’ school was a long hold investment for Te Rapa Swim Properties.
A builder himself, Director Steve Cassidy chose Fosters for the job because of their reputation for delivering quality – and the property was located on Fosters’ doorstep.
Beset with covid lockdowns and supply issues, the project was still delivered in a reasonable time frame and not far off budget, says Steve.
“Fosters know what they are doing, I enjoyed how nothing seemed to phase them” he adds.

“The construction team exceeded my expectations in the way that they handled the complications of the covid period. They could have reached for the contract at any stage, but they didn’t; they simply worked through it.
“There’s wide experience within Fosters, meaning they can bring in different expertise from within their team for a project of this scope. And they have fantastic local supply chain knowledge, which certainly helped.”
Faulty roof and wall cladding could have created a major setback. “Had Fosters not held a strong arm over the situation, there could have been a lot more time, energy and money absorbed” Steve says.
“This is a team that simply wanted to get the job done, despite the challenges thrown up. That is a rare and valuable trait these days.”
