Waikato Regional Renal Centre

Overview

Excavation and construction of a cutting-edge kidney dialysis hospital servicing the Waikato Region; also, the largest integrated renal service building in Australasia.

Completed in just 16 months, the three-storey, purpose-built facility was delivered ahead of schedule, on budget, and with zero defects, enabling Health New Zealand – Te Whatu Ora to open the doors for the start of 2025.

About the project

Designed to provide comprehensive renal care, the centre houses 63 advanced treatment spaces, consultation rooms, Whānau areas, offices, green spaces, and enhanced arrival zones, supporting a specialist renal team of 110.

Sustainability was a key focus, with the facility targeting a 5-Star Green Star rating. Warm roof construction, double glazing, carbon-neutral acoustic wall coverings, and end-of-trip facilities reduced environmental impact and enhanced building performance.

Delivery was not without challenges; an unexpected mains fibre path discovered through the site created an initial two-month delay in the critical path, while documentation lacked critical detail.

Fosters took a solutions-focused approach. Fortnightly coordination meetings with the client and project consultants maintained alignment across the project. These structured forums enabled key stakeholders to review progress against the construction programme, address design queries, resolve outstanding RFIs, and manage change control processes in real-time. BIM was critical in optimising coordination, improving efficiency, and minimising rework.

A strong focus on patient and staff safety, clear communication, flexible working hours, and practised site management ensured minimal disruption to hospital operations during construction.

This project highlights Fosters’ capability in delivering complex, future-ready health facilities that combine technical excellence, sustainability, and patient-focused outcomes. The team approach — disciplined, collaborative, and solutions-focused — offers industry peers a blueprint for delivering similarly complex health projects safely and efficiently.
