Waihi Beach Lifeguard Services Club

Overview

Waihi Beach Lifeguard Services Club wanted to create a functional ‘all-weather’ space where club members, volunteers, Surf Lifesaving NZ and the community could come together without limitations.

Fosters was awarded the contract to add an enclosed canopy to the existing deck, extending the dining area outdoors. The project included new waterproofing to finish the concrete deck floor, new aluminium doors and windows opening onto the outdoor area, plus the installation of proprietary sunshades to the canopy perimeter.

About the project

Pulling together Foster Construction as the lead contractor, Foster Engineering to fabricate the structural steel canopy, and Foster Maintain for the roofing component, Fosters provided a one-stop solution.

Challenges included a six-week timeframe and working within an operational environment most days. Working in close collaboration with the Club, Fosters re-opened the outdoor area for events and weekend activity throughout the construction period.

Delivered on time and on budget, the outcome was both functional and stylish; the newly covered outdoor space both increasing the Club’s capacity and leveraging the stunning views over Waihi Beach, whatever the weather.

Client testimonial

This bespoke project by Fosters for Waihi Beach Lifeguard Services Club was a big win for the club and the local community.

“Fosters came highly recommended by (the Club’s volunteer project manager) Craig McQuoid, who said that being a charity, we needed to get this job done right and within budget,” said Club Chair Donna Pfefferle.

“From the start, we were impressed at Fosters’ professionalism”, she continued. “Having a few ex-lifeguards on their team was a bonus; they quickly sized up what we needed, understanding that they would have to manage construction to minimise impact on our lifeguarding and search and rescue operations.”

The project had to be completed within six weeks to accommodate summer beachgoers. The construction team also shared the site with lifeguards, athletes, and club members, who were active most days. On weekends, the site had to be left clean and tidy so the club could operate normally.

When unexpected torrential rain put a stop to progress, the Fosters team put in extra time to catch up.

“Fosters collaborative approach was outstanding,” said Donna. “Always considerate of how their work might impact club activities, the level of communication from their team meant we were never in the dark about what was happening. They made it easy.

“The canopy has integrated into the building as if it was always there, and the workmanship is exceptional. Now fully functional, our enclosed deck is already more valuable to the club and visitors to Waihi Beach than we had envisioned.

“From the Club’s perspective, Fosters delivered on every level – absolutely living up to the ‘do it once, do it well’ mindset. We’ve already handed them our next project.”
