Overview
Industrial facility for Sime Motors NZ at Ruakura Superhub in Hamilton. Includes a flagship Volvo & Mack showroom, a 14-bay truck service centre, plus office space, parts storage, and a yard. The total site is 24,000m².
Constructed under a lump sum tender, the project supports multiple Sime Motors truck brands and forms a significant addition to the national Truckstops network.
About the project
A key feature of the development was the construction of six specialist truck servicing pits within the workshop, including five maintenance pits and a dedicated truck wash bay.
Installation of the underground pits required extensive excavation, precast panel installation, waterproofing, and multiple concrete pours over a prolonged programme. The pits incorporate integrated services including hydraulic fluids, compressed air, power, lighting, ventilation, brake testers, shaker plates and truck lifting equipment.
The workshop also includes a gantry crane for servicing operations, while the showroom was specifically engineered to permanently display heavy vehicles, requiring oversized aluminium joinery and strengthened concrete floor design.
Delivered on a greenfield site, the project included a new transformer installation and extensive external works. Despite design scope gaps and technical complexity, the facility was completed to a high standard and handed over two months ahead of schedule.

Client testimonial
Sime Motors Head of Property Andrew Brown describes the new Ruakura Sime Truckstops facility as a world-class, fit-for-purpose development designed to support its New Zealand Commercial Sales and Aftersales teams, customers, brands, and the future growth of the business.
“Hamilton is a key market for Sime Motors, and Ruakura is now our largest truck workshop in the North Island,” he said.
“Fosters was chosen for this project based on their track record of delivering high-calibre projects around the Waikato,” said Andrew. “They were also competitive, able to meet our brief and programme, offered an experienced team, and were in favour of using local subcontractors.
“At a time when work was short, this project supported local businesses and the local economy. That was important to us.”
What stood out for Andrew was Fosters’ proactive management of the project.
“Fosters readily engaged with our design and consultant team to achieve the best outcome from a buildability perspective,” he said. “They constantly queried whether there were more beneficial and practical ways to address the more complex issues.”
Delivered within budget, the facility was handed over two months ahead of schedule, saving Sime Motors “considerable business disruption and expense” in exiting their former leased premises.
“I’d happily recommend Fosters to other businesses looking for a high-quality build outcome,” he said.
